Ahead of Ukraine's national final Vidbir, we celebrate its host Timur Miroshnychenko and his dedication to Eurovision.
Ukraine has produced many iconic Eurovision moments, from Ruslana’s captivating Wild Dances to the inspired folktronica of Go_A’s SHUM to Kalush Orchestra’s uniting victory with Stefania. And who could forget Verka Serduchka's zany Dancing Lasha Tumbai?
But for nearly two decades, one man has been a constant figure in Ukraine’s Eurovision story: Timur Miroshnychenko.
Even during the challenges of war, he remained a vital part of Ukraine’s Eurovision presence, helping bring the contest to audiences in times of hardship.
For the unacquainted, please allow us to introduce you to Timur before his familiar face pops up again as host at this weekend’s Ukrainian National Final, Vidbir.
From humble beginnings…
Timur’s televisual journey with Eurovision began in 2005 when he became the Ukrainian commentator for Junior Eurovision – the very first year it was broadcast in Ukraine.
Two years later in 2007, Timur was elevated to the main stage when he stepped in as Ukraine’s official commentator for Eurovision.
His knowledge, charisma, and enthusiasm quickly won over Ukrainian audiences, making him the voice of Eurovision in the country.
So entwined with Eurovision is Timur, that he has either commentated or hosted Eurovision for Ukraine every single year since – a feat which has not been without fascinating challenges, as we’ll read about later!

More than just your average commentator
As a presenter, commentator, and all-around Eurovision superfan, Timur has become one of the contest’s most recognisable voices.
Whether calling the action from the commentary booth or shining on stage as a host, his passion for Eurovision has made him a legend in the fandom.
With a charming blend of wit, sparkle, and deep knowledge of the contest’s history, Timur quickly captured the hearts of viewers across Ukraine and avid Eurovision fans across Europe.
But Timur’s involvement doesn’t stop at the commentary booth—in addition to his commentary for the main event, he has also been a host for numerous Eurovision-related programs, including the Junior Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 and 2013, both held in Kyiv.
A Milestone Moment in 2017
Perhaps the crowning achievement of Timur’s Eurovision career came in 2017. Following Jamala’s 2016 win in Stockholm with 1944, Ukraine had the opportunity to host the Eurovision Song Contest for only the second time.
Timur was tapped to co-host the show, and put on a performance that attracted new fans across the globe with a blend of humour, grace, and genuine passion.

Standing on the global stage in Kyiv, he not only connected with millions of viewers worldwide but also showcased Ukraine’s vibrant spirit and resilience.
Pop-culture hero status in 2022
There’s dedication, and then there’s the kind of dedication that requires commentating on Eurovision from a war bunker!
A war bunker you say? That’s the level of adoration Timur has for Eurovision!
In 2022 during Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia, Timur took hosting to a whole new level by broadcasting from a secret concrete bunker.
Amid the stark, concrete surroundings that spoke of resilience and determination, he delivered the Eurovision coverage with unwavering poise and enthusiasm.
In that unlikely setting, Timur transformed the bunker into a symbol of hope and defiance, proving that even in the midst of conflict the spirit of Eurovision can shine through the darkness.
Timur's pure elation at seeing Ukraine announced as victors in Turin remains one of the more endearing moments amongst fans and served as a powerful reminder that music and unity can prevail even in the most trying circumstances.
The popular personality returned in Liverpool 2023 as host of the Turquoise Carpet and Opening Ceremony events, also appearing in video segments across the live shows.
What the future holds
This Saturday evening in Europe (and early Sunday morning in Australia), Timur is set to guide the audience through an exciting night of emerging talent and strong competition at Ukraine’s National Final event, Vidbir.
