Eurovision 2025 Luxembourg profile: La poupée monte le son by Laura Thorn

Writer: Jamie StewartJamie Stewart

We profile the 2025 entry from Luxembourg including details on the artist, song, how it was chosen, odds, fan reaction and how the nation has fared at Eurovision.

With five wins, Luxembourg is one of Eurovision’s most successful nations, having first won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1961 with the song Nous les amoureux performed by Jean-Claude Pascal, followed by wins in 1965, 1972, 1973 and 1983.

In the 10 years that followed their last win, Luxembourg wasn’t as successful, but did manage two top five finishes (1986 and 1988).

However, following a poor placing in 1993, Luxembourg was relegated from the competition for 1994. Luxembourg subsequently declined to participate in the 1995 contest, with the increased costs of participating in the event cited as a main contributing factor for the country's absence.

Luxembourg then returned to Eurovision in 2024 after a 31-year hiatus with the song Fighter by Tali, which ultimately finished in 13th place in the Grand Final.

In their second appearance back at the Contest after their break, Luxembourg will be represented in Basel by Laura Thorn with her song La poupée monte le son.

About the song

La poupée monte le son was written and composed by Julien Salvia and Ludovic-Alexandre Vidal.

The song, through its text and music, is a tribute to Luxembourg’s 1965 winning entry Poupée de cire, poupée de son, performed by French yé-yé icon France Gall and written by well-known French musician Serge Gainsbourg.

The title Poupée de cire, poupée de son translates to "wax doll, rag doll" in English, although the phrase "poupée de son" is also a play on words which describes France Gall as a sort of "singing doll", an image which recurs throughout the song.

France Gall and Serge Gainsbourg had an infamously strained collaboration over a number of years, culminating in a song called Les Sucettes filled with sexual innuendos and double-entendres. In later life, France Gall was very critical of Gainsbourg, saying he had controlled and taken advantage of her.

In La poupée monte le son (which translates to "the doll turns up the sound"), we therefore get a feminist response to Gainsbourg's 1965 song. Far from being just a "singing doll", Laura Thorn is turning up the volume and having her voice heard.

In the past week, Laura has released a revamped version of her song which has been released on streaming platforms.

How was Laura Thorn chosen for Eurovision?

In 2024, a Parisian musical theatre writing team consisting of Julien Salvia and Ludovic-Alexandre Vidal were searching for a Luxembourgish singer for their new track. They contacted Laura through a former singing teacher of hers to perform their song, which was later named La poupée monte le son.

Laura went on to submit the song to the Luxembourg Song Contest 2025, which acted as Luxembourg's national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2025.

On 18 November 2024, Laura was announced as one of seven finalists in the Luxembourg Song Contest 2025.

On 25 January 2025, during the final of Luxembourg Song Contest 2025, Laura received the most points from international juries and second place in the televote, ultimately winning the competition and receiving the right to represent Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest 2025 in Basel.
