Eurovision 2025 Malta profile: Serving by Miriana Conte

Writer: Emma GarrieEmma Garrie

We profile the 2025 entry from Malta, including details on the artist, song, how it was chosen, odds, fan reaction, and how the nation has fared at Eurovision.

Malta has competed in the Eurovision Song Contest 36 times since its first appearance in 1971. In its initial attempts in 1971 and 1972, Malta finished in last place both times. Following this, the country withdrew from the competition for 16 years, making a comeback in 1991 and maintaining continuous participation ever since.

This return marked a period of strong performances, with Malta securing a spot in the top 10in 12 out of 15 contests between 1991 and 2005. Their best ever result is a pair of second-place rankings for 7th Wonder by Ira Losco (2002) and Angel by Chiara (2005). They also finished in third place in both 1992 and 1998.

Representing Malta at Eurovision 2025 in Basel is Miriana Conte with her song Serving. She has the task of ending a three-year non-qualification streak for Malta, after Emma Muscat (2022), The Busker (2023) and Sarah Bonnici (2024) all failed to progress past the semi-finals. Malta last qualified for the Grand Final in 2021 with Destiny's Je Me Casse, who finished in seventh place.

About the Artist

24-year-old Miriana Conte is a Maltese singer from Valletta whose father is of Italian descent. She began taking singing lessons at age five and first entered the 2017 Maltese Eurovision Song Contest as a 16-year-old, where she finished in last place. She entered again in 2018 (12th place), 2022 (6th place) and 2024 (9th place) before taking victory on her fifth attempt in 2025.

She has also appeared on television program X Factor Malta twice in both 2018 (as part of girl group 4th Line) and 2019.

About the Song

Serving was written and composed by Miriana Conte, Matthew 'Muxu' Mercieca, Sarah Evelyn Fullerton and Benjamin 'Bnji' Schmid, with Schmid also taking on the role of producer. Originally titled Kant, which translates to 'singing' in Maltese, the word was cleverly used in the chorus as a pun referencing the phrase 'serving c*nt'.

During an interview with TVM, Conte initially stated that the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) had approved the song without requiring any lyrical changes but mentioned that the song would undergo a revamp. However, on 4 March 2025, the Maltese broadcaster PBS announced that the EBU had prohibited the use of the word 'Kant' on stage, following a reported complaint by the BBC. As a result, on 13 March 2025, the song's title was officially changed to Serving for the competition. In the updated version, the word 'kant' was replaced by a vocalization ("aahh").

How was Miriana Conte chosen for Eurovision?

The Maltese participating broadcaster, Public Broadcasting Services (PBS), selected its entry for the contest through the national final Malta Eurovision Song Contest (MESC) 2025.

Kant by Miriana Conte won the contest ahead of 23 other songs after advancing through to the final from the second semi-final. In the final, Kant finished second with the juries (88 points) and first with the televote (94 points) to win by 8 points with a total of 182 points.
