We profile the 2025 entry from Norway, including details on the artist, song, selection process, odds, fan reaction, and Norway's Eurovision history.
Norway has participated in the Eurovision Song Contest 62 times since its first appearance in 1960, and has only missed two editions since in that time. Early success evaded the nation, with it taking 25 years before Norway celebrated its first Eurovision win.
Norway has won the Contest three times: in 1985 with Bobbysocks' La det swinge, in 1995 with Secret Garden's Nocturne, and most recently in 2009 with Alexander Rybak's Fairytale.
In the past decade, Norway has continued to deliver popular entries, amassing an impressive five top 10 finishes including Mørland and Debrah Scarlett’s A Monster Like Me (2015, 8th place), Jowst’s Grab the Moment (2017, 10th place), Keiino’s Spirit in the Sky (2019, 6th place), Subwoolfer’s Give That Wolf A Banana (2022, 10th place), and Alessandra’s Queen of Kings (2023, 5th place).
Norway also holds the unenviable title of having the most last-place finishes in the grand final with 12, including 4 instances of receiving nul points.
Representing Norway at Eurovision 2025 in Basel is Kyle Alessandro with his song Lighter. Kyle aims to continue Norway’s impressive current Eurovision qualification streak of 7 consecutive grand final appearances, which is only bettered by Ukraine and Sweden.

About the artist
Kyle Alessandro Helgesen Villalobos, known professionally as Kyle Alessandro, is a 19-year-old Norwegian singer-songwriter. Born in Levanger, Norway, to a Spanish father and a Norwegian mother, his music career began at the age of 10 on Norske Talenter, the Norwegian version of Got Talent.
Following this appearance made appearances on the popular Norwegian TV show Allsang på Grensen, and also released seven singles from his debut album Første Kapittel (English: First Chapter).
Kyle made his Melodi Grand Prix debut in 2023 as part of the band Umami Tsunami, qualifying for the grand final with the song Geronimo, where they ultimately finished in last place.
About the song
Co-written with Swedish producer Adam Woods, Lighter is an upbeat pop track with uplifting lyrics. When writing the song, the pair aimed to create a piece that would connect with Eurovision audiences while maintaining a distinctively Norwegian sound.
The lyrics are inspired by Kyle’s mother, who encouraged him to never lose his light after her battle with cancer. The song's message focuses on hope, resilience, and finding the light within during challenging times.
This touching message has also influenced his costume choice, inspired by a suit of armour. Speaking to Norwegian participating broadcaster NRK, Kyle said “It helped me to create the energy for my mamma. She’s shown a warrior’s soul through her entire ordeal.”
How was Kyle Alessandro chosen for Eurovision?
Kyle Alessandro was chosen to represent Norway at Eurovision 2025 through Melodi Grand Prix 2025, the country's annual national selection competition orchestrated by Norwegian Eurovision broadcaster NRK. The final took place at the Oslo Spektrum arena, the same venue that hosted Eurovision 1996.
Nine acts competed in the final, with Lighter emerging as the winner. The selection process involved a combination of public televoting (worth 60% of the vote) and an international jury (40% of the vote) – with Kyle winning both the popular are jury votes.
Kyle convincingly won Melodi Grand Prix with a total of 307 points, a huge 117 votes ahead of second-place winner Nataleen.
