The below text has been translated directly from a Moldovan news site.
The Republic of Moldova is withdrawing from the Eurovision 2025 music contest. The announcement was made by the director of the national television, Moldova 1, Corneliu Durnescu, and the head of the Moldova Eurovision Delegation, Daniela Crudu, on January 22. The decision was made "following a detailed analysis of the current situation, as well as the economic, administrative and artistic challenges", the organizers stated. Although withdrawing from the competition, Moldova 1 will broadcast live the two semi-finals and the grand final in Basel, giving viewers the opportunity to watch the competition in the best conditions.
"The decision was not an easy one, but necessary in the current context. This year's national selection highlighted certain challenges, including a decline in public interest and the overall quality of plays and performances. This fact generated a negative perception among specialists and the public, underlining the need for a substantial reform in the selection process", said the director of Moldova 1, Corneliu Durnescu.
He stated that TRM aims to revise the selection criteria and methodology to encourage wider participation of talented artists and to provide a more consistent and competitive cultural representation on the international stage.
I consulted specialists in the music field, and most of them expressed serious reservations about Moldova's participation this year, in exact agreement with the opinion of the jury that TRM selected for this edition. We respect the opinions of professionals and the general public, and we understand that we have to make responsible decisions", said Corneliu Durnescu.
According to the director of Moldova 1, the Eurovision competition involves considerable costs, including for the organization of the national final, production of the show, promotion of the artist, travel and accommodation of the team, stage production, technical equipment and other related expenses. The participation fee of the Republic of Moldova communicated by the European Broadcasting Union (EBU) is 21,486 euros and not 176 thousand euros as was circulated in the public space, emphasized Corneliu Durnescu.
"The public broadcaster remains at the disposal of anyone to provide the necessary information. We have taken it upon ourselves to be transparent and Eurovision is no exception. At the same time, we cannot allow public opinion to be misled by false or malicious narratives." The director of Moldova 1 stated that TRM will reallocate the resources planned for this year's Eurovision participation to other projects.
This decision was not an easy one, but we assure you that it has been carefully considered. We know that we would all have liked to organize a national final and designate the piece that would represent us on the international stage. However, we strongly believe that this decision will boost participation interest for future editions. We'll make sure we come back strong at Eurovision. It is important to support the people who want to reach big stages and give them the opportunity to prepare better", said the head of the Eurovision Moldova Delegation, Daniela Crudu.
We remind you that after the live auditions on January 18, 12 artists and bands qualified for the Eurovision 2025 national final. This year, our country would have participated for the 20th time at the ESC."
