Over the weekend reporting indicated that Australia was confirmed for Eurovision 2026 with an open selection process, but was this accurate?
This was based on this written statement from SBS published on their website:
The Australian artist is chosen through an internal selection process. Submissions are now closed for 2025.
The act and song will be publicly announced before the European Broadcasting Union’s deadline in March 2025.
If you are interested in submitting an artist or song for 2026 please send to
This confirmed the internal selection that had already been presumed by Eurovision fans and commentators.
However, reporting from some that that Australia was confirmed for 2026 with an open submission based on an email address for queries, may have jumped the gun.
Eurovision 2026 confirmation and open submissions?
We clarified SBS's position on Eurovision 2026 with a spokesperson saying:
"No further details will be shared with respect to arrangements except to say we are focused on participating in the competition in 2025."
And what about the open submission?
"Like all participating countries, we won't be confirming details until a later date, but we're continuously on the lookout for talent and songs. However, submissions for 2025 are closed."
From these statements, it's safe to say that Australia is interested in 2026 but it is not confirmed.
Australia is not a full member of the EBU and does rely on the invitation to compete at each edition.
This is usually confirmed in the last few months of the calendar year.
In addition, those wanting to reach out to SBS now have a contact. We can confirm many contact Aussievision with their ideas and submissions as well.
Whether or not these queries will be part of an "open submission" is also not confirmed.
However, open submission (like that made for Australia Decides and other nations) usually come with terms and conditions and opening and closing dates.
SBS is now working with a new production company for Eurovision
In other news, SBS will no longer be working with production company Blink TV.
They will, however, still be working with Paul Clarke who has led production and creative efforts since the late 2000s.
Paul joined Beyond from Blink TV in December 2024.
News of Australia's entry is yet to be revealed, but with Eurovision deadlines looming, it will have to be within the next four weeks.
