Two more Aussie artists submit songs to represent Greece at Eurovision 2025

Two more Aussies are in contention to represent Greece at Eurovision 2025 with Maree Mamalis and Vassy among the top 60 artists who have submitted entries ahead of the Greek national final set for January 2025.

They join Australia Decides star Leea Nanos who is also in the line-up.

Maree Mamalis

Maree Mamalis is an 18-year-old singer from Melbourne who may be a familiar face to some as she competed in the 12th season of The Voice Australia back in 2023 after her haunting rendition of Billie Eilish’s song Listen Before I Go.

She earned a spot in the top 7 of Jason Derulo’s team but was eliminated in the battle rounds despite singing an impressive cover of Christina Aguilera and Demi Lovato’s feminist anthem Fall In Line.

In the same year Maree was part of the Kiss Choir for the superstar band Kiss where they performed at the AFL Grand Final.

Since then, Maree has been working on her upcoming debut EP, with a song from the project being submitted for the Greek Eurovision national final.

In an interview with the Australian Greek community newspaper Neos Kosmos, Maree talked about what it would mean to compete in the Contest.

“Oh gosh, it would mean everything. It’s such a massive opportunity and honour to be able to represent your country in something that’s so big over in Europe”.

Maree’s parents both are of Greek background with her father being born in Greece and her mother being born in Australia of Greek heritage.

About the prospect of representing Greece at Eurovision Maree said:

“It’s a big thing and it puts a bit of pressure on you especially because I wasn’t born in Greece and say I do get the opportunity to represent Greece, I’m sure people will have very mixed opinions about it and that’s fine.”

Neos Kosmos also revealed that Maree’s song entry has a modern sound with a touch of Greece with the inclusion of the bouzouki.

Vassy

Vasiliki Karagiorgos aka VASSY is an Australian singer, songwriter, record producer, and actress who became the first woman to win an ICON Award in 2023 at the Electronic Dance Music Awards, held annually in the US.

The dance music hitmaker has many big singles under her belt.

Her song Bad with David Guetta from 2014 has over 2 billion streams across all music platforms. Vassy’s 2015 collaboration with Tiesto and KSHMR, Secrets, has over 330 million streams on Spotify.

The Darwin-born artist has also landed at the top of the Billboard Dance Charts and Dance Radio eight times.

Vassy’s latest release is a self-penned jazz number, Lover Man.

Vassy confirmed with Neos Kosmos that she was approached to submit an entry for the Greek Eurovision national final.

She was asked about how it feels to possibly not only represent Greece but also Australia Vassy said:

“I feel very Australian and I feel very Greek, I identify with both."

"I think the Greeks in Australia feel proud because there’s a sense of cultural pride representing the community all the hard work that our immigrant parents went through to give us the opportunity that they did not have."

“Being a Greek woman representing the community, being a good role model for other women and the younger Greek Aussie generation aspiring to become artists or pursue their dreams in any field for that matter. I think people recognise this and can resonate. Not only am I a girl that grew up in a little small town like Darwin but I also went to the other side of the world to pursue my dreams and succeeded."

“This would be a beautiful full circle story. If my father was still alive he would feel very proud to hear people talking about me with so much Greek pride.”

Australia has a strong connection with artists of Greek heritage going to Eurovision with Sydney's Andrew Lambrou and Silia Kapsis having represented Cyprus in recent years.

The Greek broadcaster, ERT, will be selecting up to 12 entries to compete in the Greek national final.

The Greek Eurovision selection will take place on 29 January 2025 (morning of 30 January Australian time) where an artist and song will be selected with a voting make up of 50% public voting, 25% Greek jury and 25% international jury.

The show’s broadcast details are set to be confirmed closer to the date.
